To those who are visiting today or who have only been worshiping with us for the past few months – each year at this time we have a Stewardship Campaign – we raise money in order to pay salaries, take care of the building, support our social justice work in the community, and pay for programs like youth groups and such. You will be hearing about this in our Minute for Missions. Read the rest of this entry »

Last Monday night Richard and I were channel surfing in search of a baseball game. My dear husband gets very sad at the end of October and counts the days until Pitchers and Catchers, and even more importantly till Opening Day, which is a day of holy obligation in our household, complete with hot dogs, team tee shirts, and the ritual playing of Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s On First.” Read the rest of this entry »

Remember Marilyn Gifford? Many of you who joined this church 15 years ago did so because Marilyn Gifford stood at the Fellowship Hall entrance every Sunday and said “Good morning!” to you. And now Dene Young “womans” that post. How would we eat if Morag took her gift and left? Or if Nancy, Chuck, Dick, and Elspeth didn’t count the collection money? Read the rest of this entry »

Before we get into today’s scripture, I want you to keep three things in mind: This scripture passage in Matthew is a parable. It is part of a collection of parables that Matthew selected and edited and placed in this part of his narrative – right before Jesus faces his death. Read the rest of this entry »

I love All Saints’ Sunday. It’s a sweet celebration, a time of joy as we remember those who have gone before us. But it’s also a day when we can shed tears, and that’s really good because those tears express a range of feelings that can’t be captured in words, such as awe, gratitude, grief, regret, inspiration and aspiration. The last six weeks have been a revelation to me.
Six weeks ago, on Tuesday, Sept. 5 we welcomed Lenor Garcia into our church family. A stranger, an alien, and immigrant – we didn’t know her and she didn’t know us. And yet we opened our doors, and created a room and put in a shower and stood up to the powers that be and said: “You don’t separate a mother from her children.” Our faith won’t allow it. I learned a lot about community these past couple of weeks. In response to the death of my father my mother was swept up in this communal show of support and affection. Circles of friends from old neighborhoods; former fellow church members at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, First Church Arlington and current members of the Village Church at Greenspring – calls, notes, visits, food, invites to dinner. A parishioner came to his pastor, Rev. Peter Marshall, the once renowned pastor of my home church – New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. This person had a “problem” that would be nice to have! The person said: “I used to tithe when I didn’t make so much money, but now I make $500,000 a year and I can’t tithe anymore.” Read the rest of this entry »
