Change causes stress. There is an index that seeks to quantify levels of stress. Prolonged high stress can cause depression and illness. Just to note it has been found in studies that those who worship, pray, exercise and are part of a community have discernibly less stress. So coming to church is good for you! Before we get into today’s scripture, I want you to keep three things in mind: This scripture passage in Matthew is a parable. It is part of a collection of parables that Matthew selected and edited and placed in this part of his narrative – right before Jesus faces his death. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m very excited to be here – but to be honest, I’m also a little scared. You see, I was taught from a very early age that it was more important to think about what I want to say than say it; it was more valuable to listen than to speak. No wonder I spend my day in a hospital listening. No wonder figuring out what I want to say has been a struggle. Read the rest of this entry »

Two weeks ago, Ron Schmidt gave a Minute for Mission about caring and told a story about softball team members who carried a player from the opposing team who had just hit the game winning home run, but had injured her leg and couldn’t touch all the bases. Apparently if they had just left her in the dust their team would have won. I saw the new Star Wars movie “Rogue One” over the holidays. If you are into those kind of movies, I recommend it. It’s the mythic battle of good vs. evil Just when the powers of the “dark side” seem certain to win, a person arises whose power and light confounds the darkness. In this movie it is Jin a young woman. Read the rest of this entry »

Preparations for Christmas begin every year at this time. The season is called Advent, which means Coming. During this season we are to wait and watch and look for signs of the coming of God. We look for signs of Jesus – incarnation – God taking on flesh. Read the rest of this entry »

Philip and Andrew tell Jesus that some Greeks want to see him. And Jesus knows that NOW his hour has come. There are at least three other times in John’s Gospel where Jesus declares that his time has not yet come, but now Jesus is deeply aware of a change and he turns towards Jerusalem and the final days.
