WE BELIEVE THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER Get Involved

What’s Next? ~ Acts 4:1-20

April 15, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

Last week, we celebrated Easter in grand fashion at Forest Hill Church. The place was packed with almost 500 people and we could feel God’s presence in this sanctuary. Pastor John preached about how the resurrection erases our fear and gives us hope for the future because the tomb was empty – signaling that love and grace prevailed over sin and death. But this week, well, sometimes churches suffer from an Easter Hangover. Read the rest of this entry »

The Other Side of Fear ~ Mark 16:1-8a

April 8, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

Did you notice how peculiar the ending to Mark’s gospel was? Peculiar…but realistic…because I would be scared too.

It is something when you are expecting to go to a graveyard and honor the deceased…and the deceased ain’t there! That would frighten me.

I remember one time 20 years ago or so, I visited a man in the hospital on a Friday. He was going to die. He was uncommunicative. The doctors had removed all the tubes and lines. His family was around the bedside and we held a service of leave taking. It was just a matter of time.

On Monday, this man was not only still alive, he was sitting up in bed talking and drinking a cup of tea. And I will be honest; my first reaction was a mix of fascination and yes, fear. I was scared and wasn’t quite sure how to begin the conversation: “So, how ya doin’? Did you see the light?”

His answers were “all right” and “no.” Read the rest of this entry »

Cursing the Great Divide ~ Mark 11:11-26

April 1, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

You know, my friends, I don’t know about you, but I don’t like Mondays. I wake up feeling, “Yuck, another week.” I live for the weekends. (Of course, being a preacher, I often hear, “You only work on Sundays anyway!”) And I guess, as a preacher, I could take Mondays off. But then that would mean….I’d hate Tuesdays! Anyway, Monday mornings, I’m just not at my best. And it’s probably good you’re not around to see it. Read the rest of this entry »

Gethsemane ~ Mark 14:32-42

March 25, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan, 3. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. She said, “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, “Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait.” Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, “Ryan, you be Jesus!” Read the rest of this entry »

Dark Side of the Moon ~ Mark 13:1-13

March 18, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

So the phone rang the other evening and it was the voice of a person well-loved in our household. He is from out-of-town and someone that we have known for over 25 years. I am expecting a conversation about college basketball, his business, the church – you know, just small talk, just catching up. Read the rest of this entry »

Costly Generosity ~ Mark 14:1-11

March 11, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

I can’t imagine that this [Mark 14:3-9] is what John the Baptist meant when he shouted, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” John knew that the Messiah would come and things would have to change, but here, an unnamed woman reveals by anointing Read the rest of this entry »

Roadside Conversations ~ Mark 10:32-45

March 4, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

I entitled my sermon for this morning “Roadside Conversations” for two reasons. First, because of what takes place in this morning’s Scripture reading – Jesus is on the road, heading to Jerusalem. But second is because I’ve always found that traveling from point A to point B, whether from Cleveland to Washington DC to visit my Read the rest of this entry »

“Are You Listening?” ~ Mark 9:2-13

February 26, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

It was early one morning a couple of weeks ago. I was driving daughter Sarah to school. We were both sleepy, and not talking, so we turned on the radio. Not NPR, not Read the rest of this entry »

Reaching Faith ~ Mark 5:21-43

February 12, 2012 Peg Weissbrod

This story – actually two stories – is so full with vivid details and rich with movement and speech that it’s rather easy to put our selves into its storied world. If we open our hearts and minds to the instruction and guidance by the Spirit, we will receive a blessing for today. Read the rest of this entry »
