The Lenten Journey: Tough Questions ~ Luke 13:1-9

February 28, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

My sermon this morning is the third of a three-part Lenten series. I want you to think of your life as a spiritual journey of discovery, of formation and transformation. There is no part of life that is not part of the journey: both the triumphs and the tragedies. Those bleak moments when you feel as if nothing is happening may be the most profound moments of all – because there is no time that is not God time; Kairos time, full of meaning and potential time. I believe this! Read the rest of this entry »

The Lenten Journey: Opposition ~ Luke 13:31-35

February 21, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

I didn’t realize it until I looked at the text for today that I am in the middle of a three-part Lenten sermon series. Last week we took a look at the well-known “temptation” of Jesus in the desert, where he is trying to figure out who he is and what type of Messiah is he going to be. What I was trying to say last week is that Jesus encountered the same crises of identities that you and I encounter—who am I, who are you, who are we. Read the rest of this entry »

Stepping into the Wilderness ~ Luke 4: 1-13

February 14, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

Jesus in the wilderness scared and vulnerable…. Yes, the lesson begins “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit….” And we read that Jesus had great answers for the Devil’s questions – and the passage ends with his apparent victory until the next ‘opportune’ time. Read the rest of this entry »

Let Your Light Shine ~ Exodus 34: 29-35; Psalm 99; Luke 9:28-36; 2 Corinthians 3: 12-4: 2

One of my favorite musicians is Sufjan Stevens. Just this morning, I was listening to Spotify and eating my bagel and his song, “The Only Thing” came up on shuffle. It’s a really beautiful song. But what kept sticking out to me, as I was preparing to preach, was the line, “Everything I see returns to you somehow.” Read the rest of this entry »

A Love Poem from God ~ Song of Songs 1: 1-4; 2: 8-14; 1 Corinthians 13: 8-13

January 31, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

The Song of Solomon is a Love Poem. I don’t know who wrote it or when it was written, but Solomon’s name is mentioned in the text. King Solomon was known as a poet, a writer of psalms and I have to say it, as quite a lover. 1 Kings 11 reports that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. “Lusty” doesn’t even begin to describe him! One Body ~ 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31

January 24, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

Many years ago I had a dream that felt like divine revelation. In the dream I was standing on a theatrical stage taking a curtain call with a company of actors at the end of a performance. We were all holding hands and bowing in a moment of exquisite triumph. Brilliant light filled the theater and the audience’s appreciation was palpable. Read the rest of this entry »

Too Far Along To Turn Back Now ~ Lamentations 1:20 & 5:19-22; Matthew 23:37-39; Romans 5:1-11

January 17, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

On this Sunday when we remember and thank God for the life and ministry of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King I want to begin by saying that sometimes it is better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. Read the rest of this entry »

All Fired Up ~ Luke 3:15-17, 21-22; Acts 8:14-17

January 10, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

One of my first baptisms after being called to Forest Hill was for a little girl, perhaps 2 or 3 years old. Her parents were stationed overseas, moved a lot, and had not found a church – Forest Hill had been their home church and so when the parents felt moved to baptize their child it was here that they came.Well, this little girl wanted no part of me, or of getting wet.
