WE BELIEVE THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER Get Involved

A Matter of the Heart ~ Matthew 5: 1-12; 1 Corinthians 1: 18-31

January 29, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

I love the church at Corinth. It reminds me of Forest Hill. All the things that you and I wrestle with today they were wrestling with then: what does it all mean to be a Christian in a thriving and troubling world? How to be a diverse and inclusive community: slave and free, Jew and Greek, male and female? How can one be both a good citizen and a counter-culture rebel? Read the rest of this entry »

End of the Road? ~ Psalm 40:1-11, John 1:29-42

January 15, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

Today has become, for the church in America, in most places, a day of remembrance and thanksgiving for the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is right and fitting to remember an American Saint – one who gave his life for the vision of the Kingdom of God; one who made us aspire to something good; one who brought us together with words and acts that helped us envision a better America. Starlight ~ Isaiah 60: 1-6; Matthew 2: 1-12

January 8, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

I saw the new Star Wars movie “Rogue One” over the holidays. If you are into those kind of movies, I recommend it. It’s the mythic battle of good vs. evil Just when the powers of the “dark side” seem certain to win, a person arises whose power and light confounds the darkness. In this movie it is Jin a young woman. Read the rest of this entry »

God’s Resolution ~ Luke 2: 15-21

January 1, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

The ancient Romans had, in their pantheon of the gods, a god of doorways. His name was Janus. He had two faces, one looking backward and one facing forward, because he was the god of endings and beginnings. His name, of course, gives us the word January and also the word “janitor”, the custodian of doorways. Read the rest of this entry »

Good evening. God bless you and welcome! (looks  at watch… 11:25!) What are we doing here? This is WAAAY past my bedtime! Usually Mrs. Lentz and I are like the couple in the “Twas The Night before Christmas: ” “And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, had just settled down for a long winter’s nap.” Read the rest of this entry »

Rejoice ~ Philippians 4: 4-7; Luke 1: 46-55

December 11, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

Happy Gaudete Sunday! Today is the third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin imperative for “Rejoice!” You may notice that the Garretts lit a pink candle on the Advent wreath as well as the purple candles from weeks one and two. That pink candle symbolizes joy and so I say to you, “Rejoice!” Read the rest of this entry »

Keep Watch ~ Romans 13:11-14

November 27, 2016 Peg Weissbrod

As you know, today is the First Sunday of Advent. Throughout Advent we prepare for the coming of Jesus.  When we talk about preparing for Jesus it’s a little confusing, even for those of us who have been a part of the church for a long time. During Advent we prepare for the birth of Jesus. But as some people have wisely pointed out–wasn’t Jesus born last year? Read the rest of this entry »
