I love All Saints’ Sunday. It’s a sweet celebration, a time of joy as we remember those who have gone before us. But it’s also a day when we can shed tears, and that’s really good because those tears express a range of feelings that can’t be captured in words, such as awe, gratitude, grief, regret, inspiration and aspiration. Welcome to Reformation Sunday. Yes, about every 500 years or so, the church gets all shook up and resettled and so here we are: 500 years ago, Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic priest, put up his “Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences” (better known as his 95 theses) on the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church door and transformed the world. The last six weeks have been a revelation to me.
Six weeks ago, on Tuesday, Sept. 5 we welcomed Lenor Garcia into our church family. A stranger, an alien, and immigrant – we didn’t know her and she didn’t know us. And yet we opened our doors, and created a room and put in a shower and stood up to the powers that be and said: “You don’t separate a mother from her children.” Our faith won’t allow it. Dear Capri:
Welcome to the family of God! I actually believe you’ve always been part of the family because God loves everything he has made in a big way, but your baptism reminds us all of that fact. Read the rest of this entry »

The scenes from Puerto Rico and the other islands of the Caribbean that were devastated in the hurricane still leave me stunned. Likewise in many places in and around Houston – whole blocks and neighborhoods of houses completely flattened! Read the rest of this entry »

This morning, we are continuing the story of the Exodus. If you are 11 years old or younger I have a question for you – what is the Exodus? Yes, liberated from slavery in Egypt, the children of Israel are in the desert heading towards Mount Sinai. What happened on Mount Sinai? Yes, they received the Ten Commandments! But in between liberation and formation… Read the rest of this entry »

I need to start this sermon by making a confession. I did not come up with the title. My dear husband did. It’s one of the perks of being a clergy couple–we frequently talk about sermons and other aspects of our ministries over morning coffee. A few weeks ago as we were contemplating the lectionary texts for today Richard said, “I think a good title for a sermon on this text would be “Bread and Whine.” (And not the kind of wine you drink…) Read the rest of this entry »

I have always loved these great stories of the Hebrew Bible. They are stories of redemption and liberation from oppression, in which God finally hears and frees and saves. That is the narrative arc of the Bible we read and the God we serve. Read the rest of this entry »

Even though I love summertime and summer services at 10:00 and the summer choirs and quartets – and actually it feels funny putting this robe back on – I love Kick Off Sunday. The festival, the beginning of Adult Ed, seeing the children in the choirs…and it’s good to see you all! Welcome back. Read the rest of this entry »
