Practicing Resurrection ~ 1 Corinthians 15:12-20; Luke 6:17-26

February 17, 2019 Peg Weissbrod

The sermon begins around 34 minutes in. The offertory, “Wade in the Waters,” led by Mother Willie Mae Wright, begins at 1:05.

I am preaching about resurrection this morning–the central tenant of Christian faith. Jesus was crucified dead and buried and then…raised. I want to challenge you and us to claim the resurrection as a contemporary verb – a present action of reality rather than some historic event claimed or denied, or a mere theological proposition to be entombed in the mind rather than an act that changes everything and that frees the heart to live bravely, and freely and dangerously! Fishing in Deep Waters ~ Luke 5:1-11

February 3, 2019 Peg Weissbrod

This morning’s sermon begins around 15 minutes in.

I am no fisherman, although I enjoy fishing with Deanne’s father and brother on the dock of a Minnesota lake or in the ice house on the frozen water – sitting on an overturned bucket, looking down an icy hole into the depths. Frankly, I would have just as much action and luck sitting in my garage. But today Quentin read us a fishing story… Jesus tells Peter to fish in deep water after he had fished all night long. And so, I too, want to cast into deeper waters.

Whether You Like It or Not ~ Isaiah 43:1-7, Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

January 13, 2019 Peg Weissbrod

This morning’s sermon begins around 33 minutes in.

It was one of my first baptisms at Forest Hill. A family connected to this church – serving overseas with the State Department, they hadn’t found a church where they were stationed – asked if I would baptize their two-year-old daughter. I met with them, went over what baptism was all about. They were a good faithful family.

The Sunday came and the family came forward as families do and the parents answered the questions: Do you desire that your child be baptized? Relying on God’s grace do you promise to live the Christian faith, and to teach that faith to your child?

I took this child in my arms – and it all went sideways. Read the rest of this entry »
