I am preaching about resurrection this morning–the central tenant of Christian faith. Jesus was crucified dead and buried and then…raised. I want to challenge you and us to claim the resurrection as a contemporary verb – a present action of reality rather than some historic event claimed or denied, or a mere theological proposition to be entombed in the mind rather than an act that changes everything and that frees the heart to live bravely, and freely and dangerously! I am no fisherman, although I enjoy fishing with Deanne’s father and brother on the dock of a Minnesota lake or in the ice house on the frozen water – sitting on an overturned bucket, looking down an icy hole into the depths. Frankly, I would have just as much action and luck sitting in my garage. But today Quentin read us a fishing story… Jesus tells Peter to fish in deep water after he had fished all night long. And so, I too, want to cast into deeper waters.

Today is the annual meeting of the congregation and corporation, when we do the “business of the church.” Let’s ponder that together – what is the “business” of the church?

It was one of my first baptisms at Forest Hill. A family connected to this church – serving overseas with the State Department, they hadn’t found a church where they were stationed – asked if I would baptize their two-year-old daughter. I met with them, went over what baptism was all about. They were a good faithful family.
The Sunday came and the family came forward as families do and the parents answered the questions: Do you desire that your child be baptized? Relying on God’s grace do you promise to live the Christian faith, and to teach that faith to your child?
