I learned a lot about community these past couple of weeks. In response to the death of my father my mother was swept up in this communal show of support and affection. Circles of friends from old neighborhoods; former fellow church members at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, First Church Arlington and current members of the Village Church at Greenspring – calls, notes, visits, food, invites to dinner. One of my mentors at Yale Divinity School used to remind me that the old English word “parson” is an apt way to think of a priestly vocation. The word derives from the Scottish word for person and it’s helpful to remember that clergy are just people. We’re not superheroes, we’re not perfect (a fact that has surely not escaped your notice) and we don’t have all the answers. Read the rest of this entry »

Today’s a great text. The disciples are headed back to Jerusalem. And when you think about it, when you get into this scene, the disciples have to be shaking their heads in disbelief about what just happened: Jesus who had died, who had come back to life, who had been with them for a time, is now gone…and this time, for good.
