The Sower ~ Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23; Romans 12:9-21

September 3, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

In May of this year I began a new job at Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.) where I serve as the coordinator of community partnerships. On my second day on the job I was given the opportunity to start a new program called the Mayor’s Neighborhood Corps. Read the rest of this entry »

Of Monuments and Buildings ~ Romans 12: 1-8, Matthew 16: 13-20

August 27, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

With all that is going on in our world, our nation, and right here at church, it is good to remember what binds us together: Jesus Christ–“the Messiah, the Son of the Living God” as Peter declares to Jesus as they come into the district of Caesarea Philippi.

Divine Agitation ~ Matthew 15:21-28

August 20, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

There is no audio recording for today’s outdoor worship service.

Remember the classic story of the Spanish gentleman La Mancha Alonso Quijano who, in states of dementia would take on an alter ego, Don Quixote, and chase imaginary windmills, fight dragons and save maidens in distress? Read the rest of this entry »

Battered by the Waves ~ Matthew 14: 22-33

August 13, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

The recording begins with a special one-minute arrangement of We Shall Overcome sung by the Women’s Ensemble of Patty Console, Shelly Jesberger, Elizabeth Shaw and Beth Zych.

Earlier in the week as I was meditating on today’s Gospel story I was reminded of the old introduction to a comedy routine that goes something like this– “I’ve got good news and bad news. First the bad news…” This is one of those stories with a happy ending we all yearn for, but I was drawn first to the bad news, to the earlier part of the story where the disciples are far from land, battered by the waves and tossed about by fierce winds. Pothole Repair ~ Genesis 32: 22-32; Psalm 17; Luke 10: 23-24

August 6, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

For those of you who drove to church this morning, how many of you had to maneuver around areas of road construction or repair? All summer long Mark and I have had to take varying routes to and from downtown, working to avoid Shaker Blvd, Richmond Rd. and now, of course, the dreaded Fairmount/Cedar Center area. Jazz Improv ~ Genesis 29: 15-28; Romans 8: 28- 35, 37-39; Matthew 13: 31-33

July 30, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

I was thinking about God this week. I guess that’s sort of my job, no? There are lots of metaphors, lots of descriptive words for God: Severe Judge, Detached watch-maker God, “the ground of all being,” loving parent, mother hen, suffering servant, inapproachable light, Mr. Fix-it. Wait For It… ~ Matthew 13:14-30, 36-43; Romans 8: 18-25

July 23, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

Many years ago I met an unforgettable character. I was leaving the old Jewish Community Center at Taylor and Mayfield Road after a workout—so you know how many years ago that was– and an eighty-eight-year-old woman flagged me down and asked for a ride home. As I’ve shared this story over the years people have told me they had also met this woman, so I’m guessing she was an extrovert who made an impression everywhere she went. The Theology of Wonder Woman ~ Matthew 13: 19-23; Romans 8: 1-4

July 16, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

When my brother and I were little kids, we collected comic books. To us, comic books were like cartoons you could hold and “watch” them whenever you wanted. This of course was pre-internet and pre-24 hour cartoon channels. In the eighties, cartoons only came on Saturday mornings and after school. Read the rest of this entry »

Lifting the Burden ~ Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30

July 9, 2017 Peg Weissbrod

I don’t know if it’s because I start my vacation this afternoon or because we as a congregation have been through a lot lately. Maybe it’s because the energy of our country is so hyper: every day some caustic remark or divisive issue that leaves us wanting to turn off, self-medicate, or give up. Whatever the reason, these verses are  powerful to me. Read the rest of this entry »
